History of Oak Bay, British Columbia

Prior to the arrival of Europeans, Oak Bay was home to the local Coast Salish people of the Songhees First Nation. Early European settlers of the area included John Tod, whose home still stands and is reputed to be haunted. Oak Bay was incorporated as a municipality in 1906.

Check out the antique stores along Oak Bay Avenue – only a few minutes from Victoria's Antique Row. A number of historic points of interest are located in the region including architect Francis Mawson Rattenbury's home and the John Tod House (said to be haunted). Try a kayaking or sailing adventure--half day and full day trips are poplar and Discovery and Chatham Islands are favorite destinations. World-class fishing charters depart from the Oak Bay Marina and guides will take you to their favorite spots. Take a whale watching tour and get to know the resident and transient orcas.
